History of German Shepherd Dogs

• There are  a number of different theories regarding the origin of the German Shepherd Dog. The breed may be the result of crossing various breeds of German sheepdogs or was it the result of  Shepard bitches and wolves.  The true answer has been lost throughout time.
• The qualities of the German Shepherd Dog that we admire today did not evolve accidentally. With the formation of the Verien, in 1899 and under the constant guidance of von Stephanitz, the development of the modern German Shepherd began; however, as a type of dog it has existed for thousands of years. Herding dogs were used so long ago that we can not trace their beginnings.
• In the late 19th century, Captain Max von Stephanitz of Germany preserved the breed. He was looking for the perfect breeding dog, one that should have “utility and intelligence.”  That dog was Hektor Linkersheim. Captain Max selectively bred the best shepherd dogs for work ability and defined the breed’s written standard.
• The first German Shepherd Dog was presented at Hanover in 1882 and the short haired variety was first presented in Berlin in 1829.
• The German Shepherd Dog possesses unlimited potential for different situations. Thus they are able to be trained for a variety of functions. Some examples include search and rescue, law enforcement, assistance/guide dogs and great family dogs.
